It’s that time: Linen sheets (or nothing at all!)

Posted by Addison Jackson on

The Sway roundup of linen sheets is here!

Our annual picks for linen sheets—made from the healthiest materials and with third-party certifications to boot—have made an appearance in the Sway newsletter before. Consider this article the one-stop-shop list for bookmarking and browsing every time linen bedding crosses your mind.

It’s no secret that linen sheets are super popular for hotter seasons because of how light and breathable they are (confirmed by dermatologists). So if linen is your fabric of choice for summer slumber, or any other time of year, or for any other reason—maybe you run hot, love the feel of linen, or live in a warmer climate—we’ve got you.

Why linen sheets?

We’ve all heard that a cooler sleep environment helps you get a better night’s sleep: The National Sleep Foundation recommends keeping your bedroom at approximately 60-67 degrees for the best night’s sleep possible.

That said, it's certainly not cheap (or low impact on the environment) to cool a room down to 67 degrees in the heat of summer. Lightweight, breathable sheets can help keep you comfortable as the seasons heat up: enter linen, woven with enough space to encourage airflow while you sleep. Linen is made of bast fiber, strong and stiff biomatter from the inside of a plant (flax). It keeps its strength (due to being a multi-cell organism), and with proper care, you’ll be able to use ever-softening linen sheets year after year. It’s important to note strength does not mean linen sheets are stiff in texture. With various ways of pre-washing or treating linen fabric, you’re sure to find our linen sheet picks to be as comfortable as they are cool.

Our standards for linen sheets

We sort our selections into three categories:

Good: Good products are certified to OEKO-TEX, which requires testing for up to 350 regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.

Better: Better products are made with organic materials in addition to having one third-party certification for health, like OEKO-TEX or the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Best: Our Best section really shines. These picks are made entirely from natural fabrics with third-party organic certification from GOTS, and meet low emission and/or chemical screening requirements through third-party standards, like OEKO-TEX.

Using this tiered rating system allows us to include more options at a wider range of prices—it also underscores our belief that perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of the good. All of the picks are thoughtfully made to protect your health and reduce your exposure to chemicals of concern, just to varying degrees. And that’s a win regardless.

Funny thing about linen sheets, though: there aren’t many third-party certified organic options out there, especially compared to cotton sheets. When we compiled this list, we found a lot of Good, and just one single Best that precisely embodies our stringent standards for health.
