The best healthy home goods of 2022

Posted by Jennifer Easton on

We've spent the better part of the year scouring the Internet and store shelves for the healthiest home goods out there, and have rounded up the best of the best!

What do we mean when we say "healthy home goods?" We're talking about products that are...

  1. Made from verifiably safe and healthy materials...
  2. ...and that have earned key third-party certifications (when relevant).

Why does this matter? Because we spend a lot of time at home: the University of Toronto estimates we'll spend 53 years of our lives at our abodes. And since research suggests that our surrounding environment is the largest determinant of our health, it's important that the furniture and decor you bring into your home is made with your well-being in mind.

Commonly, mass-produced home goods are made with materials that can offgas inside your house and expose you to chemicals of concern that have been linked to disease like asthma, infertility, and even cancer. Choosing better-made products (researched by your friends at Sway 😉) helps you ensure a safe indoor environment for you and your family. And the great news is that the healthiest home goods are also softer, higher quality and longer lasting than their conventional counterparts.

Read on for the best picks of the year!

The best healthy home goods of 2022

Pans

Caraway: Caraway was the most popular PFAS-free (verified by the Green Science Policy Institute), non-stick cookware brand on Sway this year (by # of products purchased). Ya'll love your Caraway and we certainly cannot blame you!

Towels

Under the Canopy: Certified to both the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and OEKO-TEX Made in Green, these towels have the dual certification that we look for in Sway home textiles, come in a range of desirable colors, have great texture and durability and—the price is right. Under the Canopy has been a popular brand on Sway since adding it to the marketplace.

Sheets

Avocado: Avocado's standard sheet set was the most frequently purchased on Sway this past year, and you told us they feel "cozy and clean." These sheets are made from 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton, have been certified to both STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX and MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEXand have achieved MADE SAFE certification. The gold standard!

Target: This affordable set of organic cotton sheets from Target, which also have the double certification that we look for in home textiles (certification to the Global Organic Textile Standard—GOTS—and Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX), was the second-most purchased set of sheets on Sway. At $65 for a queen-size set and an average 4.2 out of 5 stars on the Target site, this is a great go-to.

Mattress

AvocadoThe Eco Organic Mattress really can't be beat when it comes to balancing top tier materials and certifications with comfort and affordability.

Rugs

Hook and LoomHook and Loom stands out from the crowd and sets the highest bar for healthy rugs—for so many reasons. First, they use organic cotton certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). (While it's common now to find GOTS-certified bed sheets, that's simply not the case for rugs.) Hook and Loom's organic cotton rugs are also free of dyes, and can be machine washed. We simply can't get over the care they've put into this line. Your home will be healthier for it.

Lorena CanalsListen: Your life will change when you start buying washable rugs. And these rugs are durable, too. I scooped up the Bereber rug many years back and it's still in nearly mint condition today, even after being in a high-traffic area. 100% cotton + natural dyes = a great option for healthy homes.

Best designed home products of 2022

Coyuchi, Ashbury Organic Quilt: ...feels equal parts quintessential fall and coastal grandmother, and is made entirely of organic cotton certified to GOTS as well, which places strict controls on synthetic chemical inputs. While this quilt is one of few textiles on Coyuchi's site that lacks the double certification that we look for at Sway, we're keeping this piece in our "best of design" category because, I mean, look at it. 💕

Boll & Branch, Signature Floral Silhouette Duvet SetMost of Boll & Branch's products possess the double certification that we look for in home textiles (certification to the Global Organic Textile Standard—GOTS—and Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX). These pieces are a splurge, but golly, look at that print. And hey! It's on sale—in a big way. Save almost $100 thanks to B&B's latest markdowns.

Backdrop wallcoveringsBackdrop's wallpaper is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which limits emissions of more than 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemicals. They recently dropped a new batch of designs and we could never choose a favorite. Never!

Our Place, Oven PanA sight to behold. (Honestly, is it...perfect?) The Green Science Policy Institute includes Our Place on it's list of verifiably PFAS-free pans. So: if you need a better than baseline choice for a non-stick pan ASAP, this is a good bet from a health POV, too.
